Web search
Genie can look things up on the public web when the answer is not in your company's documents: today's exchange rate, a new regulation, a supplier's public price list. Genie decides by itself when the web helps, and every answer tells you whether it used the web and why. Use this page to understand that choice and to change it for a conversation.
When Genie searches the web
In a new conversation, web search is on Auto: Genie decides for each question. Roughly:
- It searches when you ask it to ("search the web for…"), when the question needs current information ("today", "latest", prices, exchange rates, news, a recent date), or when you compare your company with the outside, for example "How does our meal allowance compare with the usual rate in Ho Chi Minh City?".
- It does not search when the question is about your own company, for example "How many days of annual leave do Contoso staff get?". Your knowledge bases are the authority on Contoso; other companies' web pages would only mislead. It also skips the web for work on text you gave it (translate, summarize, rewrite) and for greetings.
- It may search when your documents have no good answer to a general question.
See whether an answer used the web
At the top of the answer, under the agent's name, a short note explains what happened. For example:
- Searched the web because the question needs current information
- Searched the web as you asked
- Searched the web because the knowledge base had no good answer
- Answered from the knowledge base only: internal policy questions do not use the web
- Searched the web but found no reliable source
When the default assistant answered, a second note can say where it looked, such as Quick answer from documents and the web.
Check a web source
Web pages are cited like documents, with a globe icon and the site name in the answer. To check one:
- Point to the citation to see the page title and its address.
- Click the citation, or Sources at the top right of the chat. The Sources panel opens on the right.
- Web pages are listed under Web, with the site name, the page title and a snippet. Your company's documents are listed under Documents.
- Click a web source to open the page in a new browser tab.
Treat web sources with care: check the date and the site before you rely on them. See Sources and citations.

- In the message box, click + (Add photos, files and tools).
- On the Web search row, choose:
- Auto: Genie searches the web when the question needs it (the default).
- Always: search the web for every question. A Web: always pill appears in the message box.
- Off: never search the web in this conversation.
Your choice stays with the conversation. To go back to Auto from Always, you can also click the × on the Web: always pill.
Internal and public information
- Your question can leave the company. When Genie searches the web, the search words go to a public search engine. When you compare your company with the market, Genie searches only the market part of the question and leaves out your company's own wording, but the search engine still sees the words it sends. Do not ask Genie to search the web for confidential names, figures or customer details.
- Your documents stay inside. Genie sends a short search query to the web, not your documents.
- Company documents stay the authority. Even with Always, Genie treats your knowledge bases as the reference on your company and web pages as less reliable sources.
Good to know
- No Web search row? The row only appears when web search can run. Your workspace admin may have turned web search off for your workspace, your system administrator may have turned it off for the company or not set it up yet, or the agent you chose does not use the web. Try the default assistant, or ask your admin.
- Some knowledge bases never mix with the web. For sensitive knowledge bases, your admin can forbid web search. The note then reads Web search is not allowed for this knowledge base.
- Web results can be wrong or out of date. Genie prefers official and well-known sites and leaves out spam, but it cannot vouch for the web. Check important facts in the source.
- Current facts with no reliable source. If Genie finds nothing trustworthy online for a time-sensitive question, it says so instead of answering from memory.
